Videos of John's Pink Maiden and Santa Clara Wing in Flight
Tossing the aeroplane was not the correct approach to achieving flight, we discovered.
Dropping it allowed gravity to develop air circulation that enabled it to achieve flight. Montgomery did exactly this when he dropped his aeroplanes from telephone poles or a balloon.
Montgomery discovered this when he performed his extensive experiments with his water table in the 1880s. In the figure to the right, "a-e" is the wing,"g" denotes gravity and "b" and "c" are the airflows produced when falling. Given a slight forward motion, "d", these airflows will keep the wing aloft as it falls under the influence of gravity, with a resultant motion in the direction "R".

Gallant Journey
This movie is, at its heart, a romantic story with Regina Cleary playing a central and inspiring role, with a recurring theme: clouds. Some humor was injected to make the movie more interesting and it does a good job in the development of the characters. Montgomery’s sisters, Mary and Jane, who helped in the construction of Montgomery’s first aeroplanes (not Regina, as depicted in the movie), get no mention. They should have; they believed in his dream. It has several excellent depictions of the flights of Montgomery’s aeroplanes that appear to be constructed well and (mostly) according to Montgomery’s designs with tandem wings. How much “movie magic” was required to show how well they could fly? Director Wellman’s order was to "make them authentic, but safe."
